Union University Annual Homecoming Week: Here’s What’s Happening

After having to cancel all homecoming festivities last year due to Covid-19, Union University will host a series of homecoming events throughout the week, including Bulldog Madness and the second annual Buster Bowl.

Sophomore public relations major and assistant homecoming director Eva Grace Bedell hopes students take advantage of the week and encourages them to participate in the events.

“There are only two classes that have experienced homecoming,” Bedell said. “I hope students take the fact that they haven’t gotten to experience homecoming or events like this for a whole year and a half as an opportunity to get out and support our school. We should all be taking advantage of it.”

Bedell and other homecoming committee members have been planning homecoming for the past year. Several events are scheduled throughout the week for student and alumni participation.

One of the main events of the week is Bulldog Madness, which is scheduled for Tuesday night in the Fred DeLay Gymnasium at 8 p.m.

At Bulldog Madness, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be introduced and given the opportunity to show off their skills through challenges such as a dunk contest. The athletic department is looking for people to come out and show support. They will give the first 75 students a free t-shirt, and students have the opportunity to win a $1,000 scholarship.

Class council events will also be hosted all throughout the week as well as Bulldog Olympics and the intramural championship game.

Union will celebrate the 50-Year reunion for the classes of 1971-1972 as well as the 10-Year reunion for the classes of 2011-2012 during the week.

The Student Activities Council’s Homecoming Hullabaloo will be held Friday night at 8 p.m. at Jackson’s Amp at the market, featuring Jordy Searcy and opened by Davis Smith.

Homecoming events will wrap up Saturday after a full day of planned events.

Saturday at 10 a.m at Jackson Christian School, students will play in the second annual Buster Bowl.

“The first ever Buster Bowl was one of the biggest student life events Union has ever had, so we are really excited about this year,” Bedell said.

Students are encouraged to come and support the faculty and students who have been practicing for weeks leading up to the game. Since the Buster Bowl was canceled last year, the homecoming committee is hoping to see a similar turnout to the first year.

Following the Buster Bowl on Saturday, the first home basketball games of the season will be played. The women’s team will play UT Southern Firehawks at 2 p.m. and the men’s team will play Bethel University at 4 p.m. in the Fred Delay Gymnasium.

The Homecoming Cup presentation will be announced during halftime at the women’s game and the Homecoming Court presentation will be announced during halftime at the men’s game.

“We are really excited for this week and hope to see a lot of students participate and enjoy the events we have planned,” Bedell said.

The Homecoming calendar with all the scheduled events can be found on Union’s website and Instagram.
