The Cardinal & Cream is a student publication of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. Our staff ranges from sophomores to seniors and includes a variety of majors — journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, digital media studies, graphic design and art.
We publish our daily news, sports, arts & entertainment, and feature stories online. Once a semester, we publish a magazine-style issue of Cardinal & Cream, featuring more in-depth articles, photo essays, illustrations, interviews, poetry and fiction. Meet Our Editorial Team
Samuel Stettheimer, Editor-in-Chief
Samuel Stettheimer is a senior journalism major, and he serves as the editor-in-chief of Cardinal & Cream. After graduating, he hopes to continue working in local news, ideally wearing a 1930’s hat with a press pass tucked in the band. He wants to write like John Bunyan and look like Paul Bunyan.
Katherine Anne Thierfelder, Managing Editor
Katherine Anne is a senior double major in communications and creative writing. She currently serves as co-managing editor for Cardinal & Cream. Outside of reading and writing, she has a passion for youth ministry and stands by her opinion that middle schoolers are the best. Her hidden talent is keeping white shoes white, and she is currently halfway through writing a Young Adult novel. She hopes to move to Utah when she graduates and use her writing to share the love of Christ through telling stories.
Olivia Bell, Managing Editor
Olivia Bell is a junior journalism major at Union University and serves as co-managing editor of Cardinal & Cream. She loves iced vanilla lattes, writing about her thoughts, good conversation, cozy fall afternoons, and long walks on the beach. You can connect with her on Instagram @liv179234
Mattie Washington, News Editor
Mattie Washington is a junior public relations major and journalism minor. She serves as the news editor for Cardinal & Cream. In her spare time, she is a strong advocate for iced raspberry lattes and 90’s rom coms because they are superior. She hopes to one day jump into the publishing industry and work as an editor (or something else where she can get paid to read books all day long).
Noel Moore, Features Editor
Noel Moore is a junior journalism major and currently serves as the features editor for Cardinal & Cream. She enjoys meeting new people, campus walks with friends, and the chai tea in Cobo.
David Alcazar, Arts & Entertainment Editor
David Alcazar is a junior journalism major who serves as arts and entertainment editor for Cardinal & Cream. He’s passionate about music writing and attends live shows whenever he can with his favorite concert being the 1975 show he saw in Nashville.
Truman Forehand, Sports Editor
Truman Forehand is a senior journalism major who serves as sports editor for Cardinal & Cream. He loves to write about funny movies, sad music, and NFL quarterbacks. A lover of strong opinions, Truman has many of them and he’d love to share them with you.
Avery Chenault, Multimedia Editor
Avery is a senior journalism and intercultural studies major. She currently serves as Cardinal & Cream’s multimedia editor and is excited to explore new storytelling mediums with the staff and practicum writers. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and getting lost in a good book.
Rebekah Marcotte, Photo Editor
Rebekah Marcotteis the photo editor for Cardinal & Cream, and this is her second year on staff. She has Christian studies and French double majors with a minor in Photojournalism. Some of her favorite things to do are read, do puzzles, and drink coffee.
Lyla Dietz, Assistant Photo Editor
Lyla Dietz is a junior digital media communication major currently serving as the assistant photo editor for Cardinal & Cream. She loves antique stores, plants, and her betta fish Pluto. She loves all things photo, art, and design and hopes to make those passions into a career.
Faith Orr, Lead Designer
Faith Orr is a senior graphic design major and serves as the lead designer for Cardinal & Cream. Being from Colorado, she enjoys spending her time outdoors, whether that’s camping, skiing, or hiking. You can often find her behind the camera, hanging out with friends, or pursuing a new artistic hobby!
Abby Kraus, Assistant Designer
Abby Kraus is a junior graphic design major and serves as the assistant design editor for Cardinal & Cream. She loves all things art because the various mediums allow her to visually express different stories. Some of her favorite things include watching sunsets, London Fogs, laughing with friends, and endless rounds of Dutch Blitz.
I really enjoy the “Cardinal & Cream” stories. I am a freshmen here at Union and I am interested in maybe making a story of my own on here. I love writing and it seems like fun to be able to post stories and other things with giving insight on the things that are happening here at Union University. It’s cool!
