On Aug. 25, 2026, at 80 years of age, the world lost a public treasure. Known as the “Queen of Country”, Dolly Parton is an iconic American singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist. Any person, from any generation, who has listened to her songs, watched her films, or even been inspired by her kindness are mourning one and the same individual. Over the course of more than six decades of her activity, Parton created a career that extended beyond her fields of expertise, like music, movies, TV, business and charity, she became someone universally loved and gave her love back whenever she could. It is quite literally impossible to live up to such a dazzling image, which begs the question: was Dolly the last universal figure?
A “universal icon”, is a celebrity who manages to touch people of different ages, backgrounds, interests and beliefs. It seems like Dolly Parton did exactly this. For one generation, she was a legend of country music, for another – an actress and TV personality, while for another one, she was a person known from Hannah Montana, her presence on social media, her music, or her charity work. What makes Dolly Parton unique is that in the rapidly changing world of the entertainment business, she had the perfect personality to keep her trending for so many years.
If one reflects on Dolly Parton, the image of an artist associated with her original style comes up first. Parton used to have golden hair, bright clothing, long eyelashes, and even brighter character. But it was not only Parton’s looks that were distinctive compared to other artists. A brilliant songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, and a philanthropist lay behind her glamorous exterior, and she did not seem to be embarrassed about her background.
It is known that Dolly Parton originates from a big and very poor family from the Tennessee Smoky Mountains. Unlike the expectations of many people, Dolly Parton did not attempt to hide her past when she gained popularity. It is obvious that her songs were devoted to the problems of her childhood, and it was another reason for which she was beloved and loved. Consequently, she became not only one of the most famous singers but also that person with whom you can chat sitting at the table in the kitchen.
Her talent helped her to overcome generations, too. Songs like “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You” became classics and kept being constantly remade and reinterpreted by younger musicians. Even those songs composed by Dolly herself got reinterpretation from Whitney Houston in the year 1992 for the movie “The Bodyguard.”
With her acting career, Parton managed to connect with people who might not consider themselves fans of country music. Acting in the movie 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin helped her show off her natural comic ability, whereas her further performances in movies and on television helped her develop beyond being a mere entertainer. Acting as “Aunt Dolly” in Hannah Montana helped her reach an even younger generation.
Nevertheless, maybe what made Parton different from all the other stars is that she was famous for her generosity. Philanthropy wasn’t something that Parton did solely because she was a star, but because her charity work was based on her personal experience. She learned firsthand how many limitations can be caused by being unable to read and write when her father was illiterate.
My first memory of Dolly influencing my life was through her film Steel Magnolias, which my parents would often watch when I was young. Dolly played a hairdresser. My mom also would get me books sent from Dolly through the Imagination Library. That’s when my love for Dolly truly started.
Imagination Library was established in 1995 as a means for offering books to children for free. This project aimed at fostering a passion for reading and developing their early literacy skills. Through the course of time, the initiative grew beyond Parton’s native place and hundreds of millions of books have been provided to children worldwide.
This can be considered one of the most valuable aspects of Parton’s legacy. Indeed, she has achieved success and has not abandoned her native place. Instead, she has utilized her success for providing chances for other people with books, scholarships, assistance in case of a natural catastrophe or research in medicine.
But what was it that distinguished Dolly Parton from all other celebrities? It may be the sum total of all the qualities she had. She was glamorous but approachable, accomplished but humble, amusing but genuine. She was self-celebrating without losing sight of others who were different from her. Amid all the divisions that exist between Americans based on politics, cultures, and ages, Parton managed to create a personality that everyone could appreciate. In fact, even political parties and their respective representatives expressed their admiration for Parton after her death.
It is tough to call Dolly Parton “the last universal icon.” There will surely be other influential personalities, both entertainers and philanthropists. However, it will not be easy to recreate this particular combination of features again.
A universal icon is made not merely because of the huge fan base that she has amassed over the years. What has made her a universal icon is the legacy that she leaves behind which people pass on from generation to generation. Dolly has left us with music that we will continue to sing, movies that we will watch, tales that we will talk about and books that will keep on reaching children.
Dolly Parton might not really be the last universal icon. She might just be the last celebrity who belonged to everybody.
