Union Recognizes National Internship Awareness Month

In the midst of COVID-19, the month of April is recognized as National Internship Awareness Month, and Union students are encouraged to participate in some type of internship during their four years of college.

Alex Huguenard, director of the Vocatio Center, said that there are two different aspects about internships that stand out.

“Experiences shape us and allow us to learn about ourselves in a way that pure speculation and introspection cannot,” said Huguenard. “By exercising our various muscles (physically and metaphorically), we learn what we enjoy and what we, frankly, cannot stand.”

The second aspect that Huguenard pointed out was that “internships reinforce the learning we engage in the classroom.”

Internships are not just another requirement to be fulfilled. They are opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.

“Internships give us this experience,” Huguenard said, “both growing our abilities and making us a more attractive candidate when we graduate and seek to enter our chosen fields.”

Due to COVID-19, some students may be nervous about their internship still being available and others might find themselves still searching for an internship.

“When it comes to securing internships, especially during recession-like conditions, network, network, network! Make a list of everyone you know that could potentially represent an internship opportunity and pick up the phone and call them,” said Huguenard. “People don’t know you’re looking for an opportunity unless you tell them. Put yourself on people’s radars.”

Sarah Emery, senior business administration major, has had the opportunity to complete internships during her time at Union.

“Go above and beyond in your tasks. Do a little more than what’s asked of you to show what you’re capable of,” said Emery. “Take a chance. Reach out to people because you have no idea what doors can be opened from that.”

The Vocatio Center is open remotely for students who have any questions about internships. You can learn more about the Vocatio Center and how to get in touch with them on their website and on social media.

“We are eager to serve you,” said Huguenard. “Let us help you sharpen up your resume, refine your interview skills, write a compelling cover letter and develop a plan of attack for securing an internship.”
