The A&E Journal: Pop Culture Is Adapting

It’s hard to start talking about anything these days without it having it to do with COVID-19. It is painfully obvious to the whole world right now that not a single aspect of our lives is going to be spared from the effects of this pandemic. That includes the entertainment industry.

One Google search of “movie releases and concerts canceled and postponed due to COVID-19,” results in tabs upon tabs to open. It wouldn’t be too out-there to say that every movie release set to happen within the next couple of months has been postponed.

One of the first major films to cancel its upcoming release date was “A Quiet Place Part II.” John Krasinski took to Instagram to announce the decision to postpone the release of the movie from April 2 until September 4 of this year. Many other major films followed suit, with some postponed indefinitely.

Along with Hollywood, the music industry has taken a major setback as well, with several concerts and even whole world tours being postponed and canceled. Some on the list include: Justin Bieber, Rage Against the Machine, Baby Shark Live and The Rolling Stones.

As more and more states are urging citizens to stay in their homes, it’s safe to assume that every major event in the entertainment industry has been canceled or postponed. However, that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting new content.

Several film studios have made films available to rent or watch on streaming services. Frozen II was originally not set to hit Disney+ until this summer. However, Disney released it early on the platform due to the pandemic. Universal Picture Films announced that the films “The Hunt,” “Emma.,” “Invisible Man” and “Trolls: World Tour” would be available to rent on the day they were intended to roll out into the theaters.

If you make it through all the early-release movies and need more entertainment, then look no further than social media! Many celebrities have begun their own mini-series on their social media platforms to keep themselves and their fans entertained during the quarantine. Among these celebrities is Miley Cyrus, with her talk show “Bright Minded” that premiers Monday-Friday on Instagram live. Each day for an hour, she’ll provide quality and wholesome content with several special guests each day.

Krasinski also hosts his own mini-series on Youtube titled “Some Good News.” The content is exactly what you would imagine. A news show with only good news. How Utopian.

If words are too much, and you’re really missing music, then find some artists who are doing free live concerts! Justin Bieber often hops on social media, either to casually hang out with fans or sing to them. Coldplay and Pink have also performed little casual concerts on Instagram live as well.

Everything in our world is taking a hit, even the almighty entertainment industry. However, this time is giving us all the chance to be creative in figuring out ways we can entertain ourselves and keep our brains off of the horror movie going on around us.
