Biannual Senate Meeting With Dub Ended In Impeachment

On Sept. 30, 2020, at 9:30 p.m. in Union University’s Chapel, President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver spoke to students at Senate where three bills were presented and passed, a new club was officially passed and an impeachment proceeding occurred.

Oliver sought to encourage students to keep pushing and pursuing what they love despite the current struggles of COVID-19 among the university, nation and world.

“I want to encourage you, no matter what you are facing, whether it was the challenge of the moment or challenge later in life, that you would choose faith over fear, worship over worry, peace over panic and love overall,” said Oliver.

After Oliver’s words of wisdom, and his confirmation that rocky road is his favorite ice cream flavor, three bills were presented and passed.

The first bill was to provide $200 to Enactus for computer hardware. This bill would allow students to recycle old laptops for students in need of them. Senate passed this bill.

The second bill proposed would provide $200 to Zeta Tau Alpha for their philanthropy. Senate passed this bill.

The third bill proposed an installment of improved lighting in and around the Heritage residence complex.

These lights would provide students with a sense of safety when walking around campus. Senate passed this bill as well.

Senate also allowed a new co-ed volleyball club to begin on campus.

There were also three new lunch items added to the quarantine lunch menu for students in isolation.

Before the conclusion of Senate, impeachment proceedings took place for the senior class treasurer.

“This impeachment shows the integrity of SGA, and on-campus as a whole, part of being in SGA means that you are making a commitment to serve the students in order for you to do that, you must fulfill your responsibilities,” said Raymond Chahyadi, a senior economics major and current president of SGA said.

Failure to do so results in impeachment.

Chahyadi presented Senate with evidence that the senior class treasurer did not fulfill his responsibilities, such as being late to meetings, missing office hours and not communicating with his fellow council members.

The class treasurer then had the opportunity to refute the statements presented and make a case for himself to maintain his position.

After both parties presented their arguments, Senate voted to impeach him.
