Who Let The Dawgs Out: Weekend Recap

In volleyball, the Lady Bulldogs were able to clinch their first GSC tournament with an overall record of 18-11 and an impressive conference record of 10-4. The team’s most recent game against the University of Montevallo ended a tough but close loss of 0-3 (18-25, 24-26, and 21-25). It was a tough defeat, but the Lady Bulldogs are putting that behind them and are ready to focus in on the upcoming road ahead.

“We have worked so hard to get to this point, and I am so confident that we will do all we can to win in the tournament,” said senior outside hitter, Kristen Goggin. “We have really implemented our core values [faith, family, grit and gratitude] in every game and practice that have taken place and will take place.”

Along with the volleyball team making the tournament, sophomore Meghan Delaney is setting the bar for the Lady Bulldogs, being named CoSIDA Academic All-District. In the GSC, Delaney ranks #1 in attacks/set, kills/set, points/set and total attacks, along with a perfect 4.000 GPA.

In soccer, the men’s Bulldog team was also able to clinch their first GSC tournament along with the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team, with an overall record of 8-8 and a conference record of 5-6. The Bulldogs made history with a huge win against the University of Montevallo with a score of 5-2. Sophomore midfielder, Gavin Scott, led the team in goals scoring 2 of the 5 for the Bulldogs, and senior midfielder, Cole Asfour, had the final goal that put the “nail in the coffin” for Montevallo.

“It means a lot, and this team means a lot to me that I was able to put another one on the board for the guys out here and all of the hard work they’ve put in all year,” said Asfour.

The Bulldogs’ great win against Montevallo ended with a tough loss to Mississippi College with a final score of 1-0. Even though the outcome wasn’t what was expected, the Bulldogs fought hard and are ready to come back stronger next year.

For the Lady Bulldogs soccer team, the season has come to an end with an overall record of 3-13 and a conference record of 2-11. Even though it was a tough season, the Lady Bulldogs were able to pull out the W in their final game against Auburn University Montgomery with a score of 2-1. Senior midfielder, Madison Wirth, and freshman forward, Iris Seamster, both put the Lady Bulldogs on the board scoring both goals for the game.

In basketball, the men’s basketball team won season opener against Spring Hill with a final score of 90-80, getting the bulldogs off to a great start to the season. Tyree Boykin led the team in scoring with 22 points and a 50 percent FGP (8-16 FG). Even though the Bulldogs showed an impressive first game opener pulling out the win, the Bulldogs are standing at a 1-2 record, losing the past two games against Lane College and Southern Arkansas University. The season is still early, many more games are to be played and there is plenty of time for the Bulldogs to prove what they can do on the court.

Just like the men’s basketball team, the Lady Bulldogs started off their season with a win as well against #15 Nova Southeastern University with a final score of 77-56. Senior guard, Jada Smith, and junior center, Jaelencia Williams, both combined for 46 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 77 points, both scoring 23 points each. The Lady Bulldogs lost their second game of the season to Barry University in a close game of 90-82. The women won their regular season home opener against Rust College 80-62.
