Back To Olympia: Greek Olympics 2019

Union University’s 2019 Greek Olympics took place last Saturday, Oct. 5, at the soccer field on Union’s campus with every fraternity and sorority competing. Besides all of Greek life fighting for the intramural cup, Greek Olympics is the most competitive event put on for the fraternities and sororities at Union.

The sororities at Union consist of Chi Omega, Kappa Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha. The fraternities include Alpha Tau Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Last year’s Greek Olympics came down to the very last event where Zeta brought home the gold for the sororities, and Lambda Chi for the fraternities. With none of the Greek organizations showing evident dominance in any category or event, this year was looking to be an even matchup between all three sororities and all three fraternities.

The five events brought to the field this year included the following: The 4×100 relay, medicine ball throw, sled pull, rope pull and an obstacle course that crossed from one side of the field to the outside of the fence surrounding the soccer field. When the events started, there was much grit, sweat and effort put into each event, with every fraternity and sorority cheering for their own on the side lines. A repeat of last year, the organizations kept alternating back and forth in victories for each event. Going into the final event, it was win it all or go home for both the sororities and the fraternities.

“I think Greek Olympics is an event that most every Greek organization looks forward to as we kick off the year,” said Eli Parker, a brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. “I think each organization, regardless of the difference in letters, quickly gained respect for each individual that competed. It was an overall outstanding Greek Olympics- maybe one of the best in history. I was thoroughly impressed with every organization’s efforts and perseverance.”

After all of the hard work put into each event from each organization, with a very close decision, Zeta Tau Alpha repeated their victory for the girls, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon took home the gold for the guys. Every fraternity and sorority gave their all for the events placed in front of them, and there was no disappointment in the effort put into it.

“Greek Olympics is one of the best events of the year,” said sister of Zeta Tau Alpha, Savannah Moore. “There’s nothing better than watching your sisters put every ounce of energy into each event. Whether you participate or not, I think everyone would agree the adrenaline rush and excitement you experience is unforgettable.”
