Baseball and softball continue GSC play

Union’s baseball and softball teams traveled to the University of West Florida over the weekend as part of Gulf South Conference play.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs took part in a three game series against the Argonauts on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8.

In the first game of the weekend, the Lady Bulldogs came out victorious, winning 4-0.

Union scored two runs in the first inning, followed by another run in both the fifth and seventh inning.

Kelly Robey, senior sports management major and pitcher, recorded the win as she threw for all seven innings.

The second game of the day proved to be a little more challenging for the Lady Bulldogs as they fell to UWF, 2-10.

Union was first on the scoreboard with two runs in the third inning, but the Argonauts ending the game strong scoring six runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth.

Robey pitched again for the Lady Bulldogs for 4.1 innings and Megan Wolinsky, freshman pitcher, pitched for the final 1.1 innings.

However, on Sunday the Lady Bulldogs regained their composure and were able to bounce back with a 2-1 win over the Argos.

After being down 1-0 in the first inning, Union scored two runs in the sixth inning on a double hit by Summer Cross, junior nursing major and outfielder.

Robey threw for the Lady Bulldogs once again, recording the second win of the weekend.

“This weekend we really rallied as a team and put forth a total team effort,” said Hailey Cummings, sophomore cellular molecular biology major and first baseman. “After the second game we really had to rally together as a team in order to be ready on Sunday and so I was really proud of the way we played as a team and not individuals.”

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, March 11 as they travel to the University of Montevallo (Alabama) for a non-conference game.

Over the weekend, the baseball team fell to 3-15 overall and 2-10 in the GSC after taking on No. 25 UWF.

In the first game against the Argos, Union and UWF scored in the first inning. The Argos then scored three more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1. Union was able to score one more run, but was followed by another six runs by UWF, allowing them to take the game 10-2.

Marty Coursey, freshman business administration major and pitcher, recorded the loss for Union as he threw for 5.2 innings.

In the second game of the day Union was able to regain a little bit of composure from the previous game, but eventually fell 0-2 to the Argos.

Teddy Christie, sophomore physical education major and pitcher, threw for the Bulldogs for all six innings and only allowed four hits.

Sunday brought the final game of the series for the Bulldogs. UWF jumped out to a quick lead in the second inning, going up 3-0. The Argos scored another run in the fourth inning, until finally Union got on the scoreboard in the fifth, making the score 4-1. However, UWF continued to play tough and scored another six runs in the sixth inning, making the final score 10-2.

Skyler Harrison, freshman athletic training major and pitcher, threw for 5.1 innings, and Preston Thompson, senior marketing major and pitcher, threw for 2.2 innings.

“I think we showed some progress this weekend defensively and at the plate with hitting, but we have to keep working,” Thompson said. “We’re going to try build off of this weekend for our upcoming games and hopefully take some steps forward as a team.”

The game that was scheduled for the Bulldogs on Tuesday, March 10 has been cancelled. Due to the cancellation, the Bulldogs will next play in another conference series at Delta State University on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15.
