Union University softball swept Miles College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Mar. 25, at Fesmire Field with a 4-0 victory in the opening game and game two ending with a score of 4-3.
Across the two games, the Lady Bulldogs combined for a total of eight runs on 14 hits.
In the fifth inning of the opener, the Lady Bulldogs batted in two runs on a double from Courtney Marler. Camryn Langley’s RBI double allowed Marler to score, creating a 3-0 lead for Union. In the sixth, Sydney Scott’s baserunning was the driving factor behind an insurance run.
Rylee Moore’s pitching limited Miles to two hits for the duration of the opening game. In the seven innings, Moore struck out four and walked one.
The game ended 4-0, with Union feeling confident as they looked ahead to the second game of the double header.
With a final score of 4-3 in the second game, the Lady Bulldogs pulled off the sweep against Miles. With Miles leading 1-0 early in the game, Union came back in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. Moore’s three-RBI and Langley’s RBI single tallied the score 4-1 in Union’s favor. In the sixth inning, Miles scored two more runs, but the Lady Bulldogs held onto the lead, winning 4-3.
Paige Garetson is credited with the win, having pitched three innings. She was supported on the mound by Emily Claire Felder and Riley Vaughn.
With this weekend bringing the University of West Alabama to Fesmire Field, Courtney Marler, a senior pharmacy major, said doing what they know how to do will help the team in the three-game weekend.
“Something I hope we carry over into this weekend is the drive and grit to want to keep making things happen. We showed that by being down in some innings but coming back on top,” Marler said. “We have to stay focused and not get caught on our heels with a team like West Alabama this weekend.”
The Lady Bulldogs will host the Tigers on Saturday, March 28, with games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
