Union University’s Student Activities Council held its annual “Kickback with SAC” event at the Bowld Patio on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, from 7-9 p.m.
Although SAC holds an event every year during Labor Day weekend, this was the first carnival-themed event, featuring games such as cornhole, spike ball, ring toss, target practice, an inflatable rendition of kickball and more. In addition to these outdoor games, SAC also provided popcorn, cotton candy and raffle prizes.
“We just wanted to bring everyone together on a long weekend and get the whole campus together to just have fun on an off weekend,” SAC member Luke Johnson, a junior exercise science major, said.
While he did note that SAC applications were due the following day, he confirmed that the primary reason for the event was to “bring the whole community together.”
One way that this event promoted community on campus was that it provided opportunities for freshmen to integrate into the larger student body. One such example is Michael McDonnell, a freshman public relations major attending his first SAC event due to the prompting of his roommate.
When asked to describe his experience at the event, McDonnell rated the night as a “ten out of ten.”
Likewise, Morgan Daniel, a senior zoology major, expressed her thoughts concerning the event.
“They’ve offered food, which is awesome. The cotton candy is the best I’ve ever had, and I’m really enjoying it,” Daniel said. However, she did share her concern with one of the raffle prizes.
“SAC decided it was a good idea to raffle off a betta fish, and as a zoology major who has kept betta fish for many, many years, I don’t believe that this is ethical practice if you do not understand how to care for a betta fish properly,” Daniel said.
She also explained that the size of the fish tank matters, a key detail that she believes some fish owners do not take into consideration when bringing home their new fish.
Despite having entered about 146 tickets collectively with her team, to Daniel’s dismay, a different student won the betta fish. However, she later said that her friends bribed the winner into giving them the fish so they could provide a safe home for it.
