Union Softball Concludes Season At The GSC Conference Tournament In Oxford, Ala.

The Union University softball team swept Mississippi College on April 29-30 to earn a spot to play in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) tournment in Oxford, Ala. at Choccolocco Park.

“We came out strong to beat Mississippi College and we played well,” said freshman psychology major Baylee Stewart. “We had been preparing all year for games like this.”

The Lady Bulldogs went into the tournament as the eighth seed and played the top seed Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) on May 4 at Choccolocco park.

“No one expected us to be there and make it this far,” said junior criminal justice major MacKenzi David. “We played timid at first until we got our nerves out.”

Union lost 9-1 in 6 innings to AUM. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 18-28 overall, and AUM improved to 29-8.

The softball team dropped to the elimination bracket and played the sixth seed, Lee University, on Thursday, May 5.

Union lost to Lee 6-1, causing them to be eliminated from the tournament.

Going to the GSC tournament was an accomplishment for the Union University softball team. This is Union’s third time to advance to the GSC tournament since moving to the NCAA Division II level.

“We played well. We are in a good spot for next year, knowing we can make it will hold us to a higher standard,” David said. “Not every game was a good game, but we stayed consistent and worked hard, which ultimately got us to the conference level.”
