Boo At The U: A New Name To Remember

On Friday, Oct. 28, Union University residence life hosted their annual Boo at the U—formally known as Costume Coffee House—in the Bowld Student Commons as part of a spooky celebration to kick off Union’s homecoming week.

Boo at the U is an event that allows students to come out and connect through fun games, snacks and costumes.

“Reslife events are generated to generate community and having a little break from school, and having fun with your friends,” Marissa Montandon, a resident advisor and junior cell and molecular biology major, said. “Especially Boo at the U, it’s a fun one to go back and hone in on your inner child and kind of just have fun with some Halloween activities.”

New things were stirring this year at Boo at the U, including the event’s name. Montandon created the new name, which was changed to bring in a wider array of people and clarify that Boo at the U is no longer in a coffee house.

“The new name allows for a little more creativity in the activities we get to do,” Montandon said. “It’s something that will stick and allow people to remember it.”

Boo at the U included multiple fun activities like pumpkin painting, pumpkin bowling, lots of snacks, a photo booth and even Union’s very own Cobo question guy.

The night also had a movie playing on the Bowld patio, where students could watch and make smores, and a hayride featuring spooky Halloween stories.

The annual costume contest was still a part of Boo at the U, where students could enter as an individual, duo or large group.

Mylie (Mo) Sparks, junior communications major, dressed as Beetlejuice and was extremely excited about the costume portion of the night.

“It’s the one night a year that I can use this creative expression and have this opportunity to do this, and it be normalized,” Sparks said. “I love the intentionality that res-life puts into it, and getting to see other people’s costumes and everyone so willingly do a common activity is really, really cool.”

For all the winners in each costume contest category, gift cards and Union cup points were awarded.

Residence Life puts on events like Boo at the U every semester for the students, and their efforts do not go unnoticed.
