Who Let The Dawgs Out: Weekend Recap

Union’s Bulldogs were let out of their cages this weekend. They faced tough competition and adversity, but they never backed down.

The Union University men’s baseball team competed in a double header on Saturday afternoon against Maryville University. Union won their first matchup 6-2 and lost the second 6-0. After the weekend’s doubleheader, Union moved to 3-2 on the season. The team’s next series will be played at home this weekend against Bellarmine University. They have a game on Friday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. and two games on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Union University women’s softball team played away this weekend at Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs split two games on Saturday. Union beat Columbus State 9-4 and then lost 10-2 against Young Harris College. The Lady Bulldogs also split two games on Sunday. They defeated Bellarmine 10-9 and then fell to Columbus State 12-1. 

“Although this weekend was only our second on the field, we began to uncap the energy we will carry throughout the rest of our season,” said Alyssa Ward, sophomore Spanish and English double major.

Looking ahead, the Lady Bulldogs will be back in Columbus, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Columbus State Classic.

The Union University women’s basketball team played at home this weekend against Delta State University. The Lady Bulldogs won 80-66. With this win, Union improved their season to 19-4 overall and 13-2 in the Gulf South Conference. With this, the Lady Bulldogs have clinched a spot in the GSC tournament. The Lady Bulldogs are heading to the University of Montevallo to continue conference play on Thursday, Feb. 13.

The Union University men’s basketball team played an exhilarating game at home on Saturday afternoon against Delta State University. The Bulldogs won 74-67 and are now 16-7 overall on the season and 10-5 in the Gulf South Conference.

“We have two big games coming up,” said LiDonta Hicks-Gentry, senior sports management major. “In practice, we have been working on communicating and being more alert.”

This week the men’s basketball team will be on the road to play against the University of Montevallo, Thursday, Feb. 13.
