Union University Is Set To Host Annual Family Weekend

Union University Residence Life will be hosting Union’s annual Family Weekend on Sept. 27-28 as an opportunity for families of students to unite and enjoy a fun-filled weekend together.

During Family Weekend, siblings and parents are invited to fellowship with their Union student and get a peek into their life on campus. The annual weekend is packed with activities to showcase Union’s student life. Activities will include a cookout, student life fair and fireworks.

“Family weekend is so great because I get to show my parents and sister all the things I love about Union,” said Lyndsey Camp, senior digital media communications major.

Regular class schedules will take place on Friday, and families are invited to attend classes with their student to experience the university’s excellence-driven and Christ-centered classroom experience.

Friday night truly kicks off Family Weekend with a cookout at 6 p.m. on the Bowld lawn, hosted by the ladies of Chi Omega. The cookout will benefit their philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Each year, Chi Omega partners with Make-A-Wish and grants wishes to children with life-threatening diseases. Tickets for the cookout are sold for $10, and half of proceeds go directly to the Make-A-Wish foundation.

“The Make-A-Wish cookout is such a good opportunity to raise awareness for the benefits of the Make-A-Wish philanthropy,” said Lauren Presley, senior public relations major and marketing chair for Union’s chapter of Chi Omega. “We are able to use this event to raise thousands of dollars that go straight to granting wishes to kids in need. It is such a cool opportunity to see the fruits of our labor turn into changing the lives of children with life-threatening diseases.”

Following the cookout is a movie night beginning at 8 p.m. on the Watters lawn, hosted by the Student Activities Council. They will be showing “Aladdin on a large screen, and drinks, popcorn and candy will be provided. Students and their families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy this event.

On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., the Bike Recycling Club will be hosting the Run Roll Dash biking and running 5K. It will take place on Union University’s trails, located just west of the Pleasant Plains entrance. Participants are required to register online before the event.

Also that morning, students and their families are invited to have brunch with President Oliver in the Carl Grant Center at 10 a.m.

Other activities throughout the day include a corn hole tournament at 1:30 p.m. in the Grace quad, a Union Jillz ultimate frisbee game at 1 p.m., a Jaxx ultimate frisbee game at 3 p.m. and an opera workshop.

The weekend concludes with Union Night, located on the Great Lawn from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The fair includes booths with campus organizations highlighting their activities, a variety of food available for purchase and fireworks to finish off the night.
