Annual Career Fair Places Union Students A Step Ahead

Union University Bulldogs welcomed its annual career fair on Jan. 30 and 31 from 2-4 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center, held by the university’s own Vocatio Center.

Different businesses and organizations from all over the United States attended, providing each student with an opportunity to land a possible internship, summer job or first post-grad work.

Each student gained real-time experience practicing their interview skills, networking capabilities and professionalism in a useful way, benefitting students of all grade levels and potential careers.

The students who attend are expected to wear professional attire and present themselves as if they were in a real-time job environment. This level of expectations can often be worrisome for some as they enter the workforce; however, this is not the case for most Union students.

“As for me, we are trained in professionalism,” Azilee Moses, a junior elementary education major, said. “This is an opportunity where we get to have those professional level conversations and put ourselves out there on a professional level.”

The Union University Career Fair is broken down into a two-day event. The first day features business, engineering, computer science, IT and healthcare professions. The second day focuses on the areas of education, ministry and missions, nonprofits, summer camps and social work.

“This gives experience talking to employers, and getting a sense of what they are looking for,” Jacob Arehart, a junior electrical engineering major, said. “It offers connections, especially for potential job opportunities.”

The transition from student to labor force can often be daunting. The Vocatio Center’s purpose is to help students prepare for the future and be competitive applicants as they enter their industries.

When both Moses and Arehart were asked about possible nerves from attending the career fair and walking towards their future, they both responded with an overwhelming excitement that these fairs inspire for their futures.
