Union Announces New Scholarships: TeenPact, Accounting And Pastoral

Union University plans to establish new scholarships for TeenPact alumni, business majors and students involved in pastoral ministry, which will all likely come into effect next year.

Alexander Thompson Arnold PLLC (ATA) provided Union with the accounting minority endowed scholarship fund, an annual scholarship of $1,000. Preferred applicants are minorities and business majors with accounting concentrations, but anyone in a business major can apply.

To qualify for the scholarship, students were asked to write a one to three page essay about how their involvement in the community and educational experience has contributed to their personal growth and may potentially impact their career as a public accountant. Kia Min, a junior marketing major, received the scholarship in April 2021.

The Union-funded TeenPact scholarship will come into effect in the fall of 2022 and offer $2,000 per year for those who have completed TeenPact’s leadership and discipleship-focused Four Day State Class, which is held in each state capitol for students aged 13 to 19 years old.

“I’m very excited about this scholarship because it offers a very unique opportunity for TeenPact alumni to not only receive assistance from Union to pursue academics but to feel very welcome and at home in Union’s atmosphere,” said Lydia Verdoorn, a freshman and TeenPact alumna. “I have quite a few friends involved with TeenPact, and I think it would be very fun for them to come to Union.”

First Baptist Church in Loudon, Tenn. gave $45,000 to establish the O.C. Rainwater Scholarship, which will be offered to students preparing to go into pastoral ministry and will provide $1,500 to one specific student each year.

“I’ll be involved in some way in picking the recipients, probably,” said Ray Van Neste, professor of biblical studies and dean of the school of theology and missions. “I’m just really excited for a church to see the value of students getting their education to help train them for ministry and for them to be willing to give to help support it.”

As with the TeenPact scholarship, the O.C. Rainwater scholarship has yet to be awarded to a student, though it is planned to come into effect next year.
