Greek Week: Unity By Fire And Cornhole

Starting March 8, the Panhellenic and Interfraternal councils will be hosting Greek Week, an annual week of events that promote unity and appreciation for all six Greek chapters on Union University’s campus.

Greek Week is an annual event in which all chapters of both fraternities and sororities come together for worship, food and games through over the span of four days. The goal is to promote a single body within Greek life.

On Monday, the events will kick off with Greek worship, and Tuesday will be the Greek grill out and cornhole tournament. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, cornhole is a new addition that allows more people to be involved while also maintaining safe social distancing precautions.

Wednesday will be a day of representing individual chapters. Students will represent by wearing letters and taking pictures with different chapters.

Thursday will be bonfires and s’mores at the fraternity houses, prompting people from any chapter to congregate with one another. Just like the cornhole event, this is also a new addition to Greek week.

Alyssa Hughes, a junior general biology major and panhellenic president, wants this event to be a reminder of the unity and love that all chapters have amongst each other.

“Our main focus as Panhellenic is to promote unity within Union’s Greek life,” said Hughes. “We try to encourage attendance from all chapters and get as many people there as possible to hang out, get to know each other and not be exclusive to their own chapter.”

Kristen Powell, sophomore social work major and panhellenic vice president of sisterhood events, believes the Greek Week events are crucial for promoting the Greek community stands for.

“There is no other event where the whole community can come together,” said Powell.
