Jackson Gems: Hub City Deli

Trying new restaurants is at the top of my list of favorite activities. And there is one that everyone has been begging me to try. So, I caved to the pressure, gathered three of the girlfriends together and tried out the long-awaited Hub City Deli.

I had very high expectations because so many people had recommended this new deli to me. And if my expectations weren’t met, at least I love hanging out with the friends I brought along.

But my expectations were met and exceeded. I walk in at 6 p.m. on a Saturday to the smells of bread, delicious fresh meat and hot soup. The best surprise of the evening is the live, acoustic music by Allison and Jeremy Tubbs. They play covers of that chill, early 2000s music that’s always in Grey’s Anatomy (if you know, you know).

We walk up to order and are greeted by the kindness of the employees and a huge chalkboard full of different sandwiches. I am so indecisive at new restaurants, so I always ask what the best seller is. They recommended the Turkey and Brie Sandwich, which sounded incredible since I had been craving Brie all day.

We pick a booth, sit down and begin talking about all the art on the walls. The walls are filled with paintings of local Jackson buildings and landmarks. My roommate is a big fan of all the plants on the windowsills, and I just can’t get over how perfect the atmosphere inside is. From the menu to the decorations, Hub City Deli really has something for everyone.

When our sandwiches arrive at the table, there is an audible gasp by everyone. They look so delicious. As everyone unwraps the butcher paper, I realize I was the only person at the table who likes pickles. As my roommate Anna says, “There are two kinds of people in this world, those who like pickles and those who don’t.” So, as you might’ve guessed, I eat three pickles.

Now, back to the sandwich review. We have a variety of food at the table, ranging from a barbecue sandwich, a bacon burger and two of those best-seller turkey brie subs. Mine is the perfect combination of sweet and savory with the oven-roasted turkey and the sweet honey mustard and cranberry relish.

The conversations are even better than the food as we all have just come out of a long quarantine. We talk about what the season of rest had taught us and how we all value times like these, where we could get out and talk to each other in person. Evenings like this one are such a privilege in times of uncertainly. I needed this refreshing time of good food, deep conversation, and so much laughter.

If you ever want to try one of the newest Jackson Gems, get your friends together and hit up Hub City Deli for some of the best sandwiches you’ll ever have.
