Sorority Bid Day 2019 Welcomes New Members Home

Girls raced down Union’s Greek row on Saturday morning, Aug. 31, as sorority Bid Day 2019 was in full swing. During the previous week, girls from across campus participated in various recruiting events hosted by the university’s sororities: Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Delta. On Bid Day, the girls tore open envelopes containing an invitation to join one of the houses and then sprinted from the quads into the arms of waiting and excited members from their new sorority.

“Leading up to Bid Day is fun and exciting but also just full of suspense, because no one knows what house they got or which girls are running to our house,” said Corinne Allen, Chi Omega and Union alum. “But at the same time, it’s a day of celebrating and encouraging and welcoming new recruits into the houses. It’s been a lot of fun to see these people again, and we’ve all come from so far to be here together. We had people drive from all over to be here for Bid Day.”

Music from the houses drifted across campus as girls turned the corner between the Grace and Ayers dorms and rushed past the crowds gathered at the edges of the road. Not only were new recruits running, but current members who had been temporarily disaffiliated from their sorority in order to help facilitate recruitment also ran ahead of them.

“I love Bid Day because we get a bunch of new girls running home, we all get to love each other and we finally get to talk to our new recruits,” said Kendal Kelsh, junior political science major and ZTA member.

Leah Jackson, a freshman marketing major and new Kappa Delta recruit, said, “I chose KD because I felt like the girls in this group would spiritually lead me. I would feel the closest with them, and I would be the most at home.”
