SGA Holds Its Third Senate Meeting Of The Semester

Students gathered in Harvey Hall on March 13 for the third senate meeting of the semester. One bill and two resolutions were passed by an overwhelming majority with no debate, making for a quick meeting.

Emma Sanders, SGA vice president and junior business administration major, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to senate. Following was a word of prayer and the finance report in which the senate was informed that they had $1200 remaining for the semester.

The first piece of legislation was a bill asking for the allocation of $200 to Stomp Out Stigma. This is an event that raises awareness for mental illness, and it consists of a glow run and a one-mile walk. The money will go towards volunteer t-shirts, food and awards that they will give away during the event. The bill passed with no debate.

The second piece of legislation was a resolution sponsored by the sophomore class council, asking that Union University would add more handicap accessible doors on campus. A video was shown in which Ali Keck, a sophomore social work major, explained her need and the needs of some others on campus.

“Opening a door may seem simple to you, but for me, it is a struggle that is always on the forefront of my mind,” Keck said.

The resolution was passed by an overwhelming majority with no debate.

The final piece of legislation was a resolution asking that Union University would add external lighting to locations around campus. The bill proposed for the addition of flood lights in two locations around the PAC and one by the photo house where photography classes are held. The resolution was passed.

The final finance update of the meeting was given, and with the passing of one bill, $1000 remains in the budget for the semester.

Following was the SAC update. Tickets for the Variety Show are now available for purchase, and the show will be held on April 6 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.

Finally, class officer packets are now available until April 10.

With that, a motion for recess was passed. Since spring break is coming up, the next senate meeting will not take place until Wednesday, April 3.
