Construction is under way to convert a 17-acre piece of land near Highland Avenue and the West Tennessee Farmers Market into a new city walk, the largest part of a revitalization project for downtown Jackson. The project will consist of 150 apartments, two small retail and commercial centers and a large wellness center owned and operated by West Tennessee Healthcare. Global Outreach Trips introduced three new teams for spring break, allowing students new opportunities from Louisville to Memphis. About 150 people are participating in GO Trips this year, branching out to towns and countries across the globe. Out of spring break’s 12 trips, three new teams allowed students to assist communities and organizations while enjoying new experiences. Student films shine at festival

The ninth annual Student Film Festival was held Monday and Tuesday evenings, giving students a chance to exhibit their film-making abilities and win a cash prize.
The festival was directed by Cam Tracy, web development agent for university communications, and Chris Blair, associate professor of communication arts and coordinator of digital media studies.Students received the opportunity on Monday evening to screen their films in the W.D. Powell Theatre and discuss what went into the making of their movies. […]

As Republican presidential candidates traverse the country in their efforts to win the party’s support, legislators closer to home are preparing for the November elections by reaching out to new constituents in realigned districts.

Tennessee legislators set new boundaries for congressional, state House and state Senate districts early in the year, and Gov. Bill Haslam signed the maps into law Jan. 26. The maps passed the GOP-controlled state legislature by a wide margin and would seem to bolster Republican gains, packing Democratic-leaning precincts into marginalized districts and making GOP-held districts less competitive. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney solidified his delegate lead with a strong Super Tuesday showing, squeaking past former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) in battleground Ohio to move one step closer to the Republican nomination.

In Tennessee, Santorum captured 37 percent of the vote, garnering 40.86 percent in Madison County. He claimed 22 of Tennessee’s 35 delegates, Romney took eight delegates, and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, won five. […]
