The Cardinal & Cream is a student publication of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. Our staff ranges from sophomores to seniors and includes a variety of majors — journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, digital media studies, graphic design and art.
We publish our daily news, sports, arts & entertainment, and feature stories online. Once a semester, we publish a magazine-style issue of Cardinal & Cream, featuring more in-depth articles, photo essays, illustrations, interviews, poetry and fiction. Meet Our Editorial Team
Margee Stanfield, Editor-in-Chief
Margee Stanfield is a senior journalism major and English minor. She serves as editor-in-chief of Cardinal & Cream. She is happiest when curled up with a book or rewatching a Marvel or Disney film, a cup of coffee in hand and her one-eyed black cat nearby. She also has a deep love for autumn and the color brown.
Bright Burns, Co-Managing Editor
Bright is a senior journalism major who is currently serving as Cardinal & Cream’s co-managing editor. She can usually be found with a book in one hand and a coffee in the other. She is passionate about writing and about discovering new stories.
Abigail Van Neste, Co-Managing Editor
Abigail Van Neste is a sophomore journalism major at Union University, where she also serves as co-managing editor of Cardinal and Cream.
Amy De Groot, Features Editor
Amy De Groot is a senior public relations and history major from Sioux Center, IA, and currently serves as the features editor for Cardinal & Cream. In lieu of having free time, she is heavily involved in theater and signs up for far too many road races. She is passionate when it comes to characterizing and loving people well, both in her writing and in life.
Colin Harris, Arts & Entertainment Editor
Colin Harris is a senior communications major from Knoxville, TN. He loves film and simply cannot survive without watching at least three movies a week. When he’s not watching movies, you can find Colin reading, writing, playing board or video games, drinking coffee and admiring his 15 plants. A fun fact about Colin is that he watches the Extended Edition of all three Lord of the Rings at least once a month.
Luke Dalton, Sports Editor
Luke Dalton is an economics major with a minor in journalism at Union University. He is the sports editor for Cardinal & Cream and is a huge football fan. Luke is at his best when he’s surrounded by friends or enjoying God’s creation outside. He is also a huge fan of fall and an avid potato eater.
Aryanna Highfill, News Editor
Aryanna Highfill is a Public Relations major at Union University and the news editor for Cardinal & Cream. She’s happiest outside hiking, chasing sunsets or sipping coffee on a crisp fall day. She can never turn down a good conversation or a good book.
Brylee Williams, Lead Photo Editor
Brylee Williams is a senior digital media communications major and journalism minor. She enjoys taking photos at Union sports games and watching Chicago Cubs baseball.
Olivia Ten Napel, Assistant Photo Editor
Olivia Ten Napel is a junior studying digital media communications with a minor in apologetics. Come introduce yourself and talk to her about anything music, post-apocalyptic media or philosophy related! When she isn’t searching for hilarious thrift items, she adores capturing her favorite aspects of God’s Creation with photography: people and nature. Or she’s thinking about key lime pie.
Abby Thomas, Lead Design Editor
Abby Thomas is a junior graphic design major with a secondary emphasis in illustration. She loves peppermint matcha lattes, embroidery, and winter weather. She hopes to one day work in the publishing industry, supporting children’s book authors with design and advertising.
Joshua Kelley, Assistant Design Editor
Josh is a junior drawing major with a secondary emphasis in graphic design. He loves black coffee, new sketchpads, and socializes whenever he can. Josh hopes to one day become a freelance illustrator, but is seeking a job as a designer in the meantime.
I really enjoy the “Cardinal & Cream” stories. I am a freshmen here at Union and I am interested in maybe making a story of my own on here. I love writing and it seems like fun to be able to post stories and other things with giving insight on the things that are happening here at Union University. It’s cool!
