Union’s Women’s Basketball Slips Up Against Delta State

Union University’s women’s basketball let a lead slip away in a close loss to Delta State University on Feb. 10 in the Fred Delay Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs went into this game 16-7 in regular-season play and 11-4 in conference play and were confidently looking to extend their four-game winning streak despite having lost to Delta State previously in the season.

Union started the game slowly, being held to zero points, but quickly found their groove and dominated the game throughout the first three quarters, at one point holding a 16-point lead. In the fourth quarter, the game flipped on its head. Delta State went on a scoring run, closing the deficit from 67-57 to 73-71, in just six and a half minutes of play. The Lady Bulldogs showed real determination to try and get back in the lead, tying up the game 75-75. Unfortunately, during the final minute of play, Union went 2-4 from the free-throw line. Including a missed potentially-game-winning basket by junior Courtney Zensen.

Union’s Olivia Lee, a junior from Jackson, led the team with 24 points on the night. Freshman Abigail Bryan and sophomore Aubrey Sorrells both had 15 points, respectively. Zensen added 11 points as well.

“We’re really focusing on playing together as a team and being intentional with small details,” Union sophomore Annie Buisson said going into Thursday’s game. “We want to be quick to let go of mistakes so we can stay focused on the next play.”

The Lady Bulldogs will take this loss on the chin and look to bounce back quickly, having a chance to rally this Thursday night against the University of West Alabama. Union previously beat West Alabama earlier in the season and will look to do the same in the home match. The game is set for Feb. 12 at 5:30.
