Union University baseball was defeated 14-5 by Trevecca Nazarene University on Friday, March 13, at Fesmire Field.
Trevecca took an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back one-run innings in the second and third innings.
Union responded in the fourth with a five-run rally to take the team’s first lead of the game. Jordan Allen reached to start the inning before back-to-back singles led to a Dyllon Barrett RBI single with the bases loaded. Eli Ramsey added a sacrifice fly to right, and Grant Ross delivered a two-run single to center that gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead.
Trevecca answered quickly in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single and regained control of the lead in the sixth behind a two-RBI triple and a two-RBI double, extending the lead to 9-5. Trevecca would go on to add five more runs to secure a 14-5 win.
Union saw solid offensive performances from several players. Ethan Quinn finished 2 for 3 with a walk, while Ross recorded two RBIs during the fourth inning. Barrett and Ramsey each also added an RBI in the fourth.
Cash Pinson, a freshman business management major, said the team’s focus shifts to preparing for the next game after a loss.
“I think the biggest thing is being able to focus on the first game tomorrow,” Pinson said. “You usually spend some time being mad at the loss for a couple of hours, and then the focus shifts.”
Pinson, who catches, added that the team is aware of the areas that impact the outcome of a tough game and will work to improve moving forward.
“Most of the time, when you lose a game like that, there’s 2 or 3 things to pinpoint that hurt us the most,” Pinson said. “I think as a group we’re aware of those things and will be mindful of them going forward.”
Eli Ramsey, a junior business management major, said the team focuses on resetting and trusting its ability to compete with any opponent.
“When resetting, we just have to remember that we can play with anyone and need to trust that,” Ramsey said. “We need to flush what happened and be ready to attack the next one.”
Ramsey also said games like this can help strengthen the team throughout the season.
“We know we have a brotherhood and we trust each other to grow from the negatives and turn those into positives,” said Ramsey. “Baseball can have individual things happen, but it is such a team sport, and we just have to remember that we are playing for each other and for the Lord above.”
Union will look to bounce back in a midweek game against Ouachita Baptist University before travelling to West Florida for a weekend series.
