Union’s Women’s Basketball clinched the GSC trophy due to Aryn Roberts’ spectacular last-minute buzzer beater.
The Lady Bulldogs had a very successful season, with a 24-9 record, a little worse than last year’s 33-4, but still impressive.
The Lady Bulldogs played UAH three times this season losing the first two games in tight fashion. But when it mattered the most, they got it done. Due to Robert’s last-second game-winning shot. Roberts had this to say about that moment.
” I am still very excited about it; I am super grateful to take the last shot. I wasn’t supposed to take the shot. It was supposed to go to number 32, Kaitlyn Yoder. But she was too far away, and all I heard was coach say, ‘shoot,’ and as I shot, I just saw one second left on the clock.”
The game was super intense, with the lead changing 12 times during the game. Roberts, a sophomore majoring in pre-med, had a team high of 17 points in the game, her highest total yet. Talk about showing up in the biggest moments. Olivia Lee, a junior business major, was the standout for the tournament. Lee was the MVP, averaging 19.7 points over the course of three games. It is a great time for her to catch form going into regionals.
Lee said,” It obviously feels nice to have my hard work be recognized, but anyway, individual rewards are a representation of the team as a whole. Obviously honored to receive the rewards, but it’s a reflection of the team, and I’m just going to focus on doing whatever is necessary to win for the next game, no matter what my role is. And trusting in my shot and my teammates. And at this point in the season, it is about everyone is going to step up and be a family and be a team when it’s win or go home. And all the hard work and dedication will pay off, and trusting that.”
The Lady Bulldogs play their next game on Friday, the 13th, against Florida Southern, who are tenth in the bracket. This game is massively important for them as it is the stage of the season where it is win or go home.
