On Feb. 23 in Harvey Hall and Feb. 26 at Fellowship Bible Church, students from Union University presented junior and senior recitals as part of their academic and performance development.
Featuring a range of repertoire and formats, the performances highlighted both technical training and personal expression.
These recitals serve as milestone performances for music majors, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate growth through individual performance rather than the usual ensemble collaboration.
Nathan Kennedy, associate professor of piano and commercial keyboard at Union University, explained that recital expectations differ from traditional group performances.
“Recital expectations are more personal because there is a higher level of performance happening on an individual basis,” Kennedy said. “When you’re working together, usually the parts are less complicated. When you are by yourself, you’re covering a whole lot more bases than you would if you’re in an orchestra or band.”
Junior recital performers Christian Wade and Jacob Tillotson presented a 30-minute program on campus, while Gavin Kopko delivered a full-length senior recital at an off-campus venue.
Tillotson explained how expectations evolve as students progress through the program.
“Junior recitals are often just 30 minutes while senior recitals are right at an hour,” Tillotson said. “Junior recitals are planned by you and your private instructor, whereas senior recitals are usually more a showcase of what you want to perform. You have more freedom in planning your overall program with choosing your pieces, given your specific area of study, whether that be worship or commercial music.”
Being away from campus can transform the recital experience.
Evan Hollingsworth, a worship leadership major and audience member at Kopko’s performance, noted that off-campus venues create a different atmosphere for performers and listeners.
The spring recital season provides students with opportunities to perform independently, refine technical skills and communicate personal artistry through music.
These performances continue to serve as significant academic and creative milestones within Union’s music program.
