The Lady Bulldogs Fall Short At West Alabama But Showed Late Fight In Season Finale

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Union University women’s volleyball closed its season on Thursday, Nov. 14, falling in three straight sets to the University of West Alabama, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22, at Pruitt Hall.

The loss ends Union’s season at 5-22 overall and 3-17 in the Gulf South Conference.

Union struggled to find early rhythm but fought in the second and third sets. Several players contributed key moments as the Bulldogs attempted to extend the match. Elizabeth Gilbert led the way for the Bulldogs with 11 kills. Setter Kylie Creech totaled 18 assists, while Marie Torosian and Carleigh Charles added 10 digs each.

Outside hitter Parker Goff, who is a freshman exercise science major, said the team entered the match focused on finishing the season by competing for one another.

“Adjustments that we tried to make were simply playing for one another and going after everything,” Goff said. “Our focus for the game was to have fun and love on each other!”

Momentum shifts, she added, played a role throughout the night.

“There were definitely momentum shifts, as in every game,” Goff said. “A big kill or block, or even a run on the service line.”

Union produced several strong stretches in the third set, keeping the score within reach before West Alabama closed out the match.

Despite the loss, Goff said the team remained positive.

“This game felt light the majority of the game. We had some really good moments,” she said. “Yes, it sucks that we didn’t win, however I think we gave it all that we had. I am so excited to see that grit again next year!”

When asked how she wanted to improve, she said her goal moving forward is to strengthen her individual game.

“I am personally wanting to really work on my serve receive and defense as a whole, so I can better help my team in the back row,” she said. “I also want to just gain strength and endurance for next season.”

With the season complete, Union will look ahead to the offseason and the return of a core group for next year.
