Coach Mark Campbell: A Living Legend

A living legend.

People in their craft who have made a lasting impact. People who will one day be remembered as the GOAT, or the greatest of all time.

And I just passed one at the salad bar.

In his 27th season (1999 — present), Coach Mark Campbell is the epitome of a living legend. As the head coach of the Union University Lady Bulldogs, he has amassed an incomparable record of 755-120 (nearly 86% of every game he’s ever coached, by the way). His monumental career includes four NAIA National championship teams (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010) and 48 consecutive #1 rankings in the NAIA national poll (2007-2011). Not to mention, he is the fastest across all of collegiate basketball to reach 600 wins. (No, like I mean in history. He broke a record that hasn’t been broken since the ’60s.)

As one of the 100 most influential people in the history of Union University, Campbell will forever be etched in the history books. With a dynasty like the one he’s created, Campbell is one of the most talented and respected coaches of all time. With yet another accomplishment of being inducted into the women’s basketball hall of fame, Campbell is nothing short of legendary.

“He’s a goofball,” Jazalyn “Jazzy” Anousinh, former guard for Lady Bulldogs and current graduate assistant for the team, said.

Originally from San Diego, Jazzy played her first two years at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but was drawn into the portal where she immediately connected with Campbell.

“Coming from a program before that didn’t really value any relationships, and it was just strictly like a business, Coach Campbell showed me something different,” Anousinh said.

It’s no surprise that Jazzy was content the second she set foot on Campbell’s court. Having been honored as the NAIA National coach of the year four times, as well as the two-time NAIA WBCA Coach of the Year, Campbell has created not just a winning culture, but an atmosphere of greatness —something many coaches only dream of.

“Being around a culture where we put God first … it’s essentially changed my life,” Anousinh said.

Coming from the West Coast to the Bible-belt was a big adjustment for the star point guard. Originally a non-believer, Jazzy had no idea that the transfer would not only improve her playing career, but also improve her relationship with God as well. She believes a big part of this change was Campbell — the way he wasn’t afraid to answer the tough questions, didn’t push too hard and stayed consistent in his actions, embodying Christ every single day.

“It is like the greatest thing in the world ever, and it all happened because I picked up a little orange ball when I was little, and it gave me the opportunity to be here,” Anousinh said. “I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t think I was good enough for Coach Campbell to know my name.”

John Mosely, a faithful practice squad player for the last three years, has been a great asset to the success of the Lady Bulldogs since his freshman year. He’s also been a fly on the wall to witness the behind-the-scenes magic of Campbell’s success.

“He makes us feel comfortable, he’s made us feel like we can come to him with anything,” Mosely said. “I think that’s what sets him apart … he’s incredible at bringing out the best in people.

Campbell’s greatest strength is being able to recognize weaknesses of his players and attack them, helping each player to become not only the best basketball player, but the best version of themself as well. Campbell’s desire for excellence is infectious. It lights a fire under any person who has stepped foot on his court to be better. And he does so all while showing the love of Christ.

To Campbell, it’s not about the wins and the losses (although he does win a lot). It’s about the people. It’s about being a witness to the players, practice squad and assistant coaches. And it’s the small things: the way he speaks life into his players, the way he handles a locker room and the way he handles decisions with grace and poise. He is a shining example, letting his actions speak louder than words.
