Bulldog Madness: Where Pride And School Spirit Are The Loudest

As the lights dimmed inside Fred DeLay Gymnasium, I heard the roar of crowd’s cheers echo amongst a sea of flashing red and white. The announcer’s voice boomed as he highlighted the stars of the night — Union University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

On Monday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., Union University’s annual Bulldog Madness event — a kick off for Homecoming Week and basketball season — took place as students and organizations from all across campus came together to celebrate. The night not only recognized the men’s and women’s basketball team’s talent, but how each player contributes to Union’s school spirit.

The announcer introduced the teams and their players individually. As each team member was highlighted, it was clear the students brought life to their team. As they waved, smiled, and danced to the joyous crowd, it was clear to see how much these student athletes were cared for.

The personalities shown during those interactions served as an important reminder that these weren’t just athletes, but also Union students. Each one brings a unique and exciting outlook to the school we all love.

In addition to the introductions, dunk contests, relays and banner competitions also brought a spark to the event. Each competition gave opportunities for the students from different organizations to display pride and creativity, as well as exemplify school spirit.

While it may not have been a crowd of 30,000, as a smaller university, this passion was clear for students, alumni and staff alike. Creating an atmosphere that was second to none.

Addyson McCann, a freshman psychology major and cheerleader, said this was her first Bulldog Madness experience.

“It was my first time cheering with my team, which was so special, and we all had so much fun together,” McCann said. “It was also so much fun to see all of the other students come together and have a good time, and to be so hype up with us!”

Following the activities and competitions, the Union Homecoming court candidates for Mr. and Ms. Union were presented. They will be presented again on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. during the halftime of the women’s basketball game in the Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

To close out the night, A randomly selected raffle student, junior Austin Marlow, sank a half-court shot, causing even more excitement and chaos to ensue — a seemingly perfect ending for an already exciting night.

Riley Garrison, a junior business major and leader of the Union-Blitz, spoke about Bulldog Madness’ purpose.

“We want students who actually care about the athletes,” Garrison said. “At the same time, we want the athletes to know that they’re being supported in a really good way by the population, ya know?”

Ultimately, the students’ participation in Bulldog Madness and Homecoming court is what makes Union’s Homecoming so special.

Union University is a place that many students call home. Whether it be education, personal and spiritual growth, Union is a special place. And so being able to show pride and passion for that community that gives so much is something truly worth celebrating.
