Union’s men and women’s golf teams traveled to Athens, Alabama earlier this week for the Martin Methodist College RedHawk Fall Classic.

It was a great tournament for the Bulldogs as both teams finished in the top 5 of the tournament and won individual awards.

Riley Taylor, senior education major,  finished fourth overall in the tournament helping the Lady Bulldogs take second place at the tournament featuring 12 teams and 60 golfers.

Joy Cooper, senior business management major,  and KayCee Lindberg, senior sports management major,  both tied for 10th place with a score of 153.

“We posted some solid scores in the 70’s and low 80’s which placed us 2nd out of 12 teams this week,” Cooper said. “I’m looking forward to our championship season next semester. With off season coming up, we have some time to get stronger and work on our weaknesses to be really prepared for conference in April.”

The men and women’s teams are improving this fall and look forward to the spring season.

“This tournament was a major step in the right direction for the men and women’s teams,” Jon Sain, junior business management major, said. “I saw scores posted this week that I have never seen in my three years at Union.”

Union men’s golf team placed fourth in the tournament that included 10 teams and 52 golfers.

Jordan Botwinick, freshman business management major, received medalist honors. In the first round Botwinick shot a 71. In the second round Botwinick shot a 65, tournament best, placing him first place in the tournament.

Teammates Braxton Rider, sophomore cell and molecular biology major, and Sain tied for 21st with a score of 153.

“I have never been as confident or as passionate about Union University as I am at this moment, Sain said. “We have a lot to look forward to in the spring. Our team has grown much closer and we are improving much faster than I knew [was] possible.”

This was the last tournament either team will play until the spring.
