Softball splits games at Cumberland

Union University’s softball team traveled to Lebanon, Tennessee, on Feb. 25, to play a double header against Cumberland University.

Despite the rainy, cold weather conditions, the Lady Bulldogs came out on top in the first game. In the first inning, Union brought in three runs to make the score 3-0.

The Lady Bulldogs had a strong defensive game as well. They only allowed Cumberland University two runs throughout seven innings.

The team finished with a substantial lead of 10-2 over the Cumberland Bulldogs.

“We’ve been really working on our hitting all week so it was super encouraging for us to see it paying off,” said Summer Cross, junior nursing major and centerfielder for the team.  “We know the Lord gave us the ability to play softball, so seeing the outcome of that mixed with hard work is always awesome. ”

The second game of the day against the Cumberland Bulldogs proved to be more challenging than the first.

Union started off with a one run lead, but Cumberland quickly tied the game with a score of 1-1 at the bottom of the second inning.

The Lady Bulldogs responded to the run by bringing another run home in the top of the third. However, Cumberland responded by quickly scoring two more runs.

The two teams continued to fight throughout three scoreless innings. Then the Lady Bulldogs finally tied the score to make it 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

Union was unable to hold on. In the bottom of the eighth, Cumberland scored the final run of the game.

The final score was 3-4, Cumberland University.

“The first game we did really well and came ready to play,” said Reagan Schrader, junior psychology major and third basemen and catcher for the team. “However, the second game we lacked execution with runners on base. We are looking forward to this weekend as we look to adjust and come out executing. ”

The next games for the Union Lady Bulldogs will be played Feb. 27 at 12:00 p.m. at Shorter University (Georgia).
