Fresh off their spring tour, the Union University Singers will join the Men’s Choir and Cantilena for the Spring Choral Concert on April 16.

The last concert of the year will include a variety of songs and will be divided into two halves. Cantilena (the women’s choir) and Men’s Choir will perform first, followed by the University Singers.

Mixed with music majors and non-music majors alike, the choirs will sing pieces in English, Latin, Spanish and German. The Men’s Choir will be accompanied by bluegrass group Stone County Connection for one performance entitled “Poor Wayfaring Stranger.”

Phillip Lundy, junior biblical studies languages major, is looking forward to Thursday’s event as a member of University Singers. Although preparation for the spring concert started at the first of the semester, members of both choirs and Singers have been warming up all year.

“The spring concert is always really good because it’s right after tour,” Lundy said.

Over spring break, the University Singers travelled throughout the midwest, performing in twelve places in seven days.

Highlights of the trip included performances at the Old Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and The Cathedral of San Fernando in San Antonio, Texas.

Chris Mathews, associate professor of music and department chair, said the upcoming concert is a good way for attending students to explore the possibility of joining the choirs in the future.

The music department is eager to encourage students to join, regardless of their major. Cantilena and the Men’s Choir require no audition, while University Singers auditions take place during the spring semester.

“Hopefully we have some students say, ‘Hey I’d like to do that’,” Mathews said in regards to the concert.

The concert will take place at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee and is free of charge. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to last approximately an hour and a half.
