Union athletes left the National Christian College Athletic Association’s national tournament with notable awards last fall.

Four athletes received the All-American award given to those who place in the top 10 individually in their sport’s national tournament.

In golf, Brett Barry, a senior from Jackson, placed fifth in the tournament, and Kody Alexander, also a senior from Jackson, placed 10th.

With combined scores, Alexander and Barry were named first team NCCAA All-Americans.

In soccer, Union’s Guilherme Reis was named second team in NCCAA All-American, and Allyson Mohl was awarded honorable mention.

Overall, the men’s soccer team placed third in the NCCAA.

“For soccer [the All-American Award] is something that is voted on by an All-American committee group of coaches,” said Steven Aldridge, Union’s sports information director. “It is based on stats, and our two guys had great stats.”

Aldridge added that Union athletes have received All-American Awards previously in volleyball, softball, baseball and men’s soccer.

“We have had several NCCAA All-Americans in the past,” he said. “It’s up in the twenties.”

The NCCAA gives Union the opportunity to play competitively in national tournaments until it becomes a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in two years.

The change means teams will be traveling more as they face new schools in competition.
