Women’s golf team competes in first Spring tournament

The Lady Bulldogs golf team traveled to Mobile, Alabama on Monday, March 2 and Tuesday, March 3, to play in the Spring Hill College Badger Invitational.

The team finished sixth overall in the tournament out of nine teams. There were three players who finished in the top 20. Lindsay McRee, junior business administration major, finished tied for eighth. KayCee Lindberg, sophomore sport management major, and Rilee Taylor, sophomore education major, both finished tied for eleventh.

“I thought we played a little better than the scores indicated,” said Andy Rushing, head golf coach. “I never want to make excuses but we haven’t even been on the golf course.”

The team’s recent practice time has been limited due to the past week’s weather, but the team remains positive.

“We knew going into this tournament that we were behind,” McRee said. “But the great thing about golf is everyone is in the same boat. The others teams were dealing with the bad weather just like us.”

The average team score this week was a 350, but Rushing said they are capable of better scores.

“We have more than five players who are capable of shooting the scores we need to compete,” Rushing said. “We just need four of them to do it on the same day.”

Last Fall the Lady Bulldogs had second and third overall finishes in two of the four tournaments they competed in, as they intend to improve upon those finishes this semester.

“I want us to get better every day,” Rushing said. “I want to have a better showing this coming week if we get to play and hopefully play close to our potential by the time conference rolls around.”

Lindsay McRee broke both personal and Union records in the Fall and, according to Rushing, shows promise for the Spring season.

“I think Lindsay’s ceiling is really high and I think she can be one of the best players in the conference,” Rushing said.

As the Spring season sets in, the players are eager to begin working toward their conference goals.

“Hopefully with more scheduled practices and great weather we can successfully put in the hard work in practice and see it pay off,” McRee said.

The Lady Bulldogs will compete again on March 9 and 10 at the Battle for the Ridge hosted by Christian Brothers University in Bartlett, Tennessee.
