Weekend proves challenging for athletics teams

This weekend proved to be an eventful and challenging weekend for Union University athletic teams, as they fought hard on the road, only to have victory elude them.

The Bulldog and Lady Bulldog soccer teams traveled together this Friday to Livingston, Alabama. They played their respective games against University of Western Alabama that evening. Men’s soccer lost 0-1 to West Alabama. It marked their first conference loss of the season. Men’s soccer played a second road game this weekend at University of Alabama Huntsville on Sunday in Hunstville, Alabama. Once again, the final score was a 0-1 loss.

The women’s team, meanwhile, also faced their first conference loss. West Alabama won their game 2-1. It was an intense match, tied when the clock initially ran out. It was not until four minutes into double overtime that West Alabama managed to score the winning goal. Union’s team suffered a second loss early Sunday afternoon at University of Alabama Huntsville. The final score in that game was 0-1.

This weekend, Union’s volleyball team also went on a road trip in search of wins against the conference’s two top teams. They had a game on Friday in Valdosta, Georgia, and a second in Pensacola, Florida the next day. Both games ended in losses. In the first, against Valdosta State University, Valdosta swept Union.  The final score was Union, 0, and Valdosta, 3. Saturday’s game against University of Pensacola yielded an identical score (0-3), as the Lady Bulldogs faced defeat again, this time at the hands of the undefeated Lady Argos.

On Saturday, the men and women’s cross-country teams ran in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. Overall, the men’s team finished 28th out of the 36 teams that competed. Will Donelson, junior chemistry major, finished 30 out of the 287 participants with a 25:37 against teams like the University of Kentucky, the University of Mississippi, the University of Indiana, and more D-I schools. The women, meanwhile, ranked 18th out of the 33 schools in their race.

After a difficulty weekend of road games, the soccer and volleyball teams are looking for redemption and victory as they return to campus for games during the upcoming week and weekend. The cross country teams, meanwhile, will be traveling to another meet next weekend.
