Student Senate passed a resolution April 8 asking the administration to permanently add Easter Monday to the academic calendar as a holiday. Ryan Harris, junior engineering major, presented the resolution.

Several senators supported the resolution, citing traveling difficulties caused by not having Monday off as well as the desire to celebrate the holiday with family.

“I’m really proud of our senators because of how the debate has been going and how the involvement has been increasing,” said Emma Kurt SGA vice-president and sophomore biology major.

Two other resolutions and one bill were also passed.

Brandon Rutledge, sophomore social work major, presented a bill asking for $200 to fund a dinner for the social work department.

“I hope to create more of a family atmosphere within the social work department,” Rutledge said. “Food equals fellowship for me.”

After questions from other senators concerning the details of the dinner, the bill passed.

Emily Johnson, freshman conservation biology major, presented a resolution for the addition of signs mapping the two mile running route around campus. The cost of the signs was discussed and determined to be relatively inexpensive.

Two senators expressed their support of this resolution, and it passed.

Trey Gerrell, junior Christian thought and tradition major, presented the final resolution requesting the replacement of the Bowld Gym basketballs. An amendment was passed to include the replacement of the basketball nets, and the resolution passed.

Benton Hurt, SGA treasurer and sophomore biology major, said $795 is left in the budget for the semester. Next senate will be the last time during the academic year for organizations to present a bill requesting money.

“It’s better to have money left over than spend too much,” Kurt said. “I’m hopeful that our senators will be asking for more money next [senate], but they are doing a good job of being good stewards.”

The last senate will be April 22 in Harvey Hall at 9:30 p.m.
