Golf overcomes slow start at SkyHawk Invitational

The Union University men’s golf team continued their season at the University of Tennessee at Martin’s SkyHawk Invitational in Buchanan Sunday through Tuesday.

They looked to improve off their less than ideal opening performance last week at the Union University Invitational. Their confidence and optimism never wavered as they looked to move forward to their next tournament for improvement and gaining new experience for freshmen.

Paris Landing Golf Club hosted 11 teams for the three-round, 54-hole tournament that Union has not been a part of since 2013. In that performance they placed 10th out of 14 teams.

This year, the men’s golf team finished ninth overall, while Alabama State University took first place.

The golf team played well on Monday and Tuesday, posting scores of 304 and 306, but it was not enough to overcome a slow Sunday start of a 324.

Results:
1. Alabama State University – 846
2. UT Martin – 853
3. Murray State University – 858
4. John A. Logan Community College – 895

Union’s top scorers were Trey Whitnell (231) and Braxton Rider (233).

The women will rejoin the men next week as they both travel to Freed-Hardeman Oct. 12-13 for the Freed-Hardeman Invitational held at the Covington Country Club.
