It has been a long road to Union for Nashville native and freshman elementary education major, Daniel Ashworth.

Ever since his sister graduated from Union in 2010, Ashworth has known that the Christ-centered atmosphere would be a great fit for his education after high school, and now he could not feel more at home.

From relaxing study times in Barefoots to the new friends he meets daily, Ashworth has found campus life to be truly rewarding, but he knows it takes more than wishful thinking to make a successful friendship.

“Like all friendships, you have to work to make them grow,” Ashworth said.

The biggest change for him so far in adjusting to college life is making real life decisions and discovering the impact those decisions have. Learning to be an adult, taking care of various forms of paperwork, doing laundry and being independent are just a few of the many changes Ashworth is adjusting to.

Ashworth is also passionate about theater and entertaining kids.

“I used to be a nut inside a shell, now I’m a nut outside of a shell…when working [in the theater] with kids you have to have a lot of energy, creativity, passion and you need to be on your toes,” Ashworth said. “When [our high school] did shows for kids, they were the best audience we ever had.”

Ashworth is one of the newest members of the Blank Slate Improv team, and he hopes to gain a role in Union’s upcoming theater production.

Although he enjoys his current church, Cornerstone Community Church, he hopes to visit other churches in the area to get a broader sense of community in the Jackson area.

During his free time, Ashworth can usually be found hanging out with friends or reading the Bible or any one of his 39 books about theology.

He participated in Union’s ½ K race last Saturday and enjoyed developing a greater love for his dorm Sullivan while also experiencing cheers, community and camaraderie with fellow members of the building.

One thing that stands out in Union culture from his short time here is the constant helping nature of others. Over the coming years, Ashworth looks forward to students and faculty alike who are always eager to share and express their love for Christ with him.
