Auxiliary gym identification checks to be periodically implemented

A new periodic check-in system has been implemented in the E.T. “Rocky” Palmer Activity Complex, or the auxiliary gym, in the Penick Academic Complex.

While a valid student identification card has been previously required to use the gym, it wasn’t kept up with regularly. Now, there will be regular check-ins that require students and staff to sign in and show proper identification.

Other people will have access to the gym, but it will be limited. Guests will gain access to the facility by filling out paperwork provided at the desk outside of the gym along with paying a fee of $5 per day of use.

Check-ins will not take place all the time, generally only during weekdays and after 4 p.m.

Blake Pennington, director of wellness services, said the change was brought upon by unauthorized use of the complex.

Union University is an open campus, with the exception of recreational facilities. This is due to liability concerns.

“Our recreation facilities are to be enjoyed by Union students, faculty, and staff,” Pennington said. “Guests may use the facilities by filling out some paperwork and for a fee of $5 per day.”

These changes will not affect classes or daily basketball games such as “noon ball,” or any other activities that students and faculty participate in the facility.

“In theory it is a good effort to resolve the issue of non-Union students using the facilities and resolving the liabilities issues that are involved with that,” said Jonny Wilson, senior athletic training major.

“Time will tell if the new checks will be effective,” Wilson said.

The hours will remain the same: 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Sundays during the regular semester.

The gym will continue to be run in accordance with the campus handbook relating to campus facilities, “in an attempt to meet the needs and interests of students.”
