Wins and losses for Union Bulldogs

The weekend of October 24 was heavily loaded with multiple games and matches for Union sports. As of Sunday, the 26 of October, Union’s Lady Bulldog soccer team dropped to 1-9 in Gulf South Conference play and 3-11 overall and the men’s team improved to 2-6 in Gulf South Conference play and 3-10 overall.

Friday, the Lady Bulldogs kicked off the weekend with a win against Shorter University 1-0. The men’s soccer team followed with another win against Shorter 2-1.

Chip Crockarell, senior on the field and Master’s of Business Administration graduate student, said that having support on the field was everything to the teams and always help them perform better.

“Making the conference tournament was one of our goals, and our seeding was based on our performance this weekend and we did well!,” Crockarell said. “The crowd is an advantage we are known for in the conference. Players always mention the “hype” our peers bring.”

The men’s and women’s team played again on Sunday against Lee University. The men’s team won 1-0 and the women’s team fell in the 33rd minute when Lee University scored.

The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team had a close game against the University of West Florida on Friday.

The girls won the first 26-24, lost the second set 25-18, won the third set 25-22 and lost the fourth and fifth sets 25-22 and 15-11.

Tripp Swisher, the Lady Bulldogs head volleyball coach, said he was proud of the way the team performed this weekend and is looking forward to this next weekend’s match.

“It was exciting to see the [team] competing at a high level against the top team in the conference,” Swisher said. “To see them compete and have a chance to win especially against West Florida was definitely great to see. …We’ve gotten to where we can compete now we just need to learn how to close a game”

Swisher added that he and the team have been working hard on remembering that what is important is to worry about the process of the game, not the result.

This upcoming weekend is another big match for the women’s volleyball team and they are excited about the game on Halloween against the University of West Georgia because it is a team that Union has lost to in the past and is neck and neck with.

“It is our goal is to finish ahead of everyone since we were picked last in the conference so that is a game we need to win in order to get even or hopefully ahead of them,” Swisher said.

The Lady Bulldog volleyball is set to play again Tuesday, the 28th at the University of North Alabama and Friday, the 31 of October against the University of West Georgia in the Fred Delay Gymnasium at 6:00 pm.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams are also scheduled to play Christian Brother’s University. The women’s game will begin at 5:00 pm and the men’s game will follow right after at 7:15.
