Elise Seufert, a junior social work major on the volleyball team, and Emily Waggoner, a junior athletic training major on the women’s soccer team, were recognized by the Gulf South Conference this past week for their athletic performance during the first week of play for both teams.

Seufert earned the title Defensive Player of the Week as she lead the team with 67 digs in the four games the team played at the Henderson State (Ark.) tournament. Seufert currently has a total of 118 digs and serves as the main libero for the Lady Bulldogs.

Seufert, a native of Lansing, Ill. has been playing volleyball for 11 years and was very encouraged to have been recognized by the GSC.

“It means a lot to be recognized because of how much talent there is on each of the teams in the GSC. It also means a lot because of the hard work I know everyone has been putting in for the past two years while we have been transitioning to NCAA Division II.

“It is nice that different players will be recognized for that now,” said Seufert.

Waggoner, a goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team, was also named the Defensive Player of the Week as she recorded three saves in the shutout win against Trevecca Nazarene in the Lady Bulldog’s season opener.

Waggoner currently has a .714 save percentage on 14 shots attempted against thus far in the season. She has also logged 135 minutes in goal in the three games the team has played.

Waggoner is a native of Mayfield, Ky. and has been playing soccer for 15 years. She was very grateful to her teammates for receiving this award.

“I am very thankful to my teammates for always having my back during games, without them this award would not be possible. My teammates stop so many attacks before the other team can even reach the goal,” said Waggoner.
