Union’s men’s and women’s golf teams participated in the Freed-Hardeman Invitational last week and hosted the Union University Invitational this week at the Jackson Country Club.

In the Freed-Hardeman Invitational the men’s team placed third out of six competing teams, and the women placed second out of six.

Monday and Tuesday’s Union Invitational was an opportunity for the teams to do well on a course where they practice often, said junior accounting major and team member, Trey Whitnell.

The women’s team placed third, and the men’s combined a score of 923 to land them in sixth place.

“We just didn’t show the rounds that we had been hoping for at our invitational, but it’s still the beginning of the season, and I think we are going to be able to put out some low scores and have a good one,” said Whitnell. “We all still need to mature as golfers, and I know we are capable of winning a tournament.”

The women’s team is showing a lot of promise and improvement, said Andy Rushing, director of athletic facilities and head coach for both teams.

“We are doing pretty well this year,” said Joy Cooper, a sophomore business administration major and team member. “We started off strong, and we are on the verge of a breakthrough with some low scores.”

“Since we are one of the smallest athletic teams on campus, the golf team is like a family,” said Cooper. “Through our wins and our losses, we all come together and strive for better.”

Both teams are looking forward and learning from their play the past two weeks. The men have an upcoming invitational in Kilen, Ala. on October 20th and 21st.
“We are practicing hard and hoping to show off that hard work soon,” said Whitnell.
