Union golf wraps up fall tournaments

The Union University men’s and women’s golf teams concluded their fall seasons on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Matt Dyas Invitational tournament, hosted by the University of West Georgia.

The Bulldogs finished 14th at the tournament, which was held in Carrollton, Georgia at the Oak Mountain Championship Golf Course. Union posted a three-round score of 937, improving their score in each of the three rounds. UWG, the host team, took first place at the tournament with a score of 853.

“This was our first time playing at Oak Mountain,” said Trey Whitnell, junior accounting major. “We didn’t do as well as we thought we would, but we improved our team scores each round.”

Whitnell was Union’s top finisher, coming in tied for 41st place with a three-round score of 229.

Union will begin their spring season with a match play event against Trevecca Nazarene University on March 2, 2015.

“I feel that we will have more success during the spring semester because it gives the new guys more confidence,” said Whitnell. “Since they have already played one semester of college golf, it really helps. We won our first tournament last year and I think we can do the same thing next semester.”

The Lady Bulldogs wrapped up on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Martin Methodist College RedHawk Fall Classic. The RedHawk Classic was held at the Lawrenceburg Country Club in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Union finished in fifth place, shooting a team score of 679 through two rounds.

Lindsay McRee, junior sports medicine major, was the top Union finisher, finishing sixth with a two-round score of 161.

The Lady Bulldogs will also resume match play on March 2.

“We finished up well and will be striving to come back in the spring with some lower scores,” said Joy Cooper, sophomore business administration major.
