Golf teams prepare for upcoming tournaments

The midpoint of the semester often allows a chance for reflection, a chance for evaluation, a chance to make new goals. That is the case for the men’s and women’s golf teams.

“Now that our fall season is closing with this upcoming tournament, I am looking forward to having a good end to this part of our year,” says KayCee Lindberg, sophomore sports management major and member of the women’s team. “I’m hoping, as a team, we can have fun and play well.”

The women’s team most recently came back from playing in the Lady Flames Shootout at Lee University where they finished ninth out of thirteen teams.

“I hope we finish strong,” says Lindberg. “I would love to win the last tournament of our fall season. I hope we all finish out this tournament well so that we can have more confidence going into our spring season.”

Next up for the women’s team is a tournament hosted by Martin Methodist in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. on Monday, Oct. 27 and Tuesday, Oct. 28.

The men’s team is qualifying to play in their next tournament hosted by the University of North Alabama on Monday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 21, says Trey Whitnell, a junior accounting major and member of the team.

“This will be my first time playing this course,” says Whitnell. “It will be the first time for most of the team. Since this is our first tournament playing in the Gulf South Conference, the competition will be a lot stronger.”

The team has been practicing, but the recent weather has prevented them from doing as much as they would like, Whitnell says.

Head coach, Andy Rushing, has told the teams to go out there and have fun and not to “become victims of the golf course.”

“One thing that most people don’t understand about golf is that it can be one of the most frustrating games out there,” says Lindberg. “During a round you go through so many highs and lows, but it’s comforting to know that I have a team that experiences the same frustrations, and we understand what one another is going through both on and off the course.”

These two tournaments will conclude the fall season for the golf teams as their next tournament will be March 2015 as part of the spring season.
