Early lead helps men’s basketball defeat Rust College 96-74

On Wednesday, Nov. 19 the men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 as they defeated Rust College out of Holly Springs, Mississippi, 96-74.

The Bulldogs went up 36-9 within the first ten minutes of the game and never trailed from there. At halftime, the Bulldogs were up 59-38. Marterrance Brock, junior sports management major and guard for the Bulldogs, led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds. Corieon Pearson, senior business management major and guard for the team, followed close behind Brock with 23 points. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc.

Pearson felt the lead the team was able to create at the beginning of the game was the difference maker for the Bulldogs.

“We started off the game really well and we were able to build a huge lead in the beginning, but we have to find ways to be able to sustain that energy,” said Pearson. “We played well enough to win the game, but we have to keep improving to get to where we want to be.”

Brock also thought the lead at the beginning of the game was a huge factor and allowed them to control the tempo of the game.

“We took control of the game early and we were able to knock down open shots to get the point spread,” said Brock. “However, we need to do a much better job on the defensive end.”

Pearson agreed with Brock that defense is something that could use improvement at this point in the season.

“I thought we really shared the ball well as we assisted on more than half of our field goals on the game,” Pearson added. “But we have to get better defensively though, we have yet to reach our goal thus far this season defensively.”

The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Huntsville, Alabama to play in the Alabama Huntsville Classic against Stillman College on Saturday, Nov. 22 and Benedict College on Sunday, Nov. 23.
